This Week's New Music feat. Warpaint, Mogwai, Mount Kimbie and more...

Where has this year gone? Writing up this article, I noticed how many of these tracks are from albums due out next year. Still, at this rate next year should be rather good with new albums from Mogwai and Warpaint out within it's first weeks alone. And let's not get too ahead of ourselves, there are still two months remaining and a whole load of releases you should keep an ear out for. So let's see what I've got here...

Warpaint - Love Is To Die

Warpaint made quite a mark back in 2010 with their debut album The Fool. After gaining awards, acclaim and commercial attention in equal measure the all girl four piece. They have been quite for a while noew but broke the silence with this new track Love Is To Die from their upcoming self-titled album due out next year. The track sees the band on strong form, recalling a dream pop of bands like Mazzy Star and Lush, with the same sense of scale in their sound that made them such a success. Rough Trade will release Warpaint on the 20th January 2013.

Mogwai - Remurdered

This week instrumental rock veterans Mogwai announced their follow up to their solid 2011 album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. After sound tracking the French Zombie drama Les Revenants earlier this year the band camped down to work on a new album due out next year called Rave Tapes. This new track from the upcoming album shares that filmic sensibility with the kind of synth that wouldn't be out of place in a John Carpenter film back by the heavy build that mogawi have spent two decades perfecting. Rave Tapes is out on January 20 in the UK through the band's own Rock Action label.

Samantha Crain - Paint

There is no end to folk singer/songwriters but that makes it all the more impressive when a new act comes along and demands that you hold your ears in her direction. The track uses sparse and considered arrangements, the few piano chords and bass notes really add wait to a chorus, but Samantha's voice is the real draw and holds your attention throughout with a gentle strength. Recently signed to Full Time Hobby, Samantha Crain will release her debut album Kid Face on January 13th.

Swearin' - Dust In The Gold Sack

Trying to figure out where you've heard that voice before? The singer of this band is Allison Crutchfield is the sister of Katie, who records under the name Waxahatchee, though Allison’s band packs a bit more punk rock bite they share more than a recognisable voice, as this tune shows off Swearin's knack for a great melody and rough slacker rock distortion. This is what I want to think of when I think of Pop Punk. The track is from the band's upcoming album Surfing Strange. The album will see release 4th November on Wichita and you can stream the whole of the their new record on the .

John Talabot - Without You (reduced mix version)

It says a lot when you're invited to contribute to the prestigious DJ kicks series with only one album proper to your name. Still John Talabot has been allowed to curate his own mix for the long running collection, I’m sure in part due to his acclaimed live sets. This track, Without You, is one that he produced for this mix for this mix and Talabot had this to say about it: “this is the exclusive track I made for my dj kicks. it was done while travelling europe and finished in barcelona in July'13”. Without You will be on John Talabot's entry to the DJ-Kicks series out November 12.

Mount Kimbie - Made To Stray (DJ Koze Remix)

The original version of Made To Stray was a stand out from Mount Kimbie's second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth which came out way back in May. This new EP of remixes from the album features remixes by Kyle Hall, Lee Gamble and this mix by the always interesting German producer DJ Koze. His mix spreads out the track out into an 8 minute long club friendly beat bringing in parts of the originals rhythm and chord progression into the spacious minimal precedings over its duration. The DJ Koze remix of Made to Stray appears on the CSFLY Remixes EP, and was released earlier this week through Warp Records.
