I'm back once more for another round up of music from the previous seven days. This week I've brought you some dream pop, hip hop and surf rock as well as some hard to define electronica amongst my eclectic selection. Let's get straight to it...
Kurt Vile – Feel My Pain
Following up his latest album Walking On A Pretty Daze, Kurt Vile is putting out an EP of tracks from the same recording session titled It’s A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared). The track is just what you'd expect from Vile, motorik drum beats, intricate and pretty guitar lines and his slightly sleepy singing style. Matador is releasing the EP on November 19 and you can download the above right here.
Dum Dum Girls - Lost Boys and Girls Club
Dum Dum Girls make the kind of dream pop that sounds like it was made two decades ago, and this song is no exception. A noisey pop number, the group manage to get a big sound and the vocals are pleastantly upfront in the mix. The rather lavish video was apparently funded by the clothes chain H&M. The music industry can be strange. The single is from the band's upcoming album Too True out early next year on Sub Pop.
La Lux - Brainwash
Here's another group that hark back to a specific era, this time it's the sixties. The group bring together the harmonies of girl group bubblegum pop with the reverb laden guitar tones of Dick Dale-esque surf rock with the end result being really fun, energetic and charming. Their debut album It's Alive came out last month on Hardly Art.
Darkstar - You Don't Need A Weatherman (cult x zomby remix (kollaps))
This remix comes from the second of two new remix EPs from electronic group Darkstar, who released their second album News From Nowhere earlier this year. This remix comes from the ever elusive Zomby who alters the track beyond reconginition, leaving only some murky vocals intact and bringing in a pleasingly heavy bass sound over some chopped up 2-step percussion. The EP titled HD7 comes out November 25 Warp and features some redone version of album cuts by Darkstar.
Glass Animals - Woozy (feat. Jean Deaux)
This collaboration between Oxford group Glass Animals and Canadian rapper Jean Deaux seems like the kind of grouping that can only happen in the internet age. The sounds they create also tap into current musical trends, the varied but precise electronica that gives room to the live instrumentation that makes its own space over the track. Female rapper Jean Deaux definitely steals the show with her confessional delivery that teeters on breaking down but never does. I'm expecting some interesting stuff from this group in the near future.
Gaps - I Know It's You
The Brighton based duo have been gaining hype with the few songs they've been putting out, especially their last single Cascade, mixing intimate acoustics and vocals with laptop electronica. This latest track continues their style with cut up samples forming the percussive centre of the song around simple guitars. The single I Know It’s You is out on December 9th through Sexbeat and expect a full length release next year.
Raum – In Held Company
I'm going to end this week's column with some rather lush ambient sounds from Liz Harris, better known as Grouper and multi-instrumentalist Jefre Cantu Ledesma. “Commissioned by the San Francisco, CA based Glass, House, the LP is a loose set of memories, dreams & imagines interpreting the visual work of Latvian artist Vija Celmins for piano, guitar, keyboard, voice & tapes” which they have used to create warm, enveloping sounds. The LP by the group will be out November 15th 2013.
