So I said I'd try and get some more guitars in this edition and I might have failed you. Though I have at least got some guitars from Post-Metal veterans Pelican and a new track from Grizzly Bear that'll hopefully suffice. Apart from that, I also have some neo-classical, some electronic pop and some folk-hop (yeah, I just come up with that genre and I don't think I'll be using it again) amongst your weekly dose of new music.
Nils Frahm - Says
Here's a track form the forthcoming album by neo-classical composer Nils Frahm, who made Felt, one of my favourite albums of 2011. This new track, Says, from his upcoming album starts out with sparse and spacious arpeggios before the minimal ambience gradually unfolds, adding layer upon layer until it reaches an intense conclusion that demands your attention. His new album Spaces will be out on Nov 18 via Erased Tapes.
Pelican – The Cliff
Post-metal heavyweights Pelican have been a reliable staple of instrumental guitar music for some time now alongside acts like Neurosis and Russian Circles. This track from their latest record, Forever Becoming, makes good use of clean sounds to throw you off-guard after the heavy riffs that preceded it, like calm after a storm. If you feel the need for some more masterful riffing check out the wonderfully named Immutable Dusk also from Forever Becoming, which is out October 15 through the ever-reliable Southern Lord label.
CocoRosie - Gravediggress
Here's a video for the
latest single from the hip-hop folk duo's new album Tales of a GrassWidow, which was released a few months ago. Mellow hip hop beats (which sound like their made from voices) with soft piano chords, an accordion and those distinctive voices making for a mix that sounds like nobody else. And yes, the video with the dancing clown is rather strange. Tales of a GrassWidow came out earlier this year on City Slang.
Jackson and His Computerband - Vista (Hudson Mohawke Remix)
I featured a single from Jackson and His Computerband's new record a few weeks back which had more than a little of Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke's maximal style, which is appropriate as Hudson has seen fit to remix a differnt track from Jackson's new album. This track revels in its blatantly 80s sounds, upping the original with the kind of huge drums and bold synthesizers that Hudson has made his own and that just bring a big dumb smile to my face. His sound is unashamedly cheesy and probably not for everyone but it has enough to it to not just be another 80s throwback. The remix is taken from the forthcoming EP titled G.I. Jane (Fill Me Up) due out November 11 whilst the original track Vista is taken from the album Glow released at the beginning of September on Warp Records.
Seekae - Another
Here's a follow up to another one of my favourite records from 2011, this time from Australian electronic trio Seekae. For their third album they've teamed up with Caribou collaborator David Wrench, and the synth pop tones of Caribou's last record Swim can be heard in this mid-tempo vocal-led number, seems to be a departure from their previously mostly instrumental sounds. I'm still a little undecided on this one, but I'll probably give the record a chance just on the strength of their last album +Dome. Their new album should see release early next year through Sydney-based label Future Classic.
Grizzly Bear - Will Calls (Marfa Demo)
Taken from an extended version of last year's album Shields, featuring remixes and unreleased tracks including this very one, Will Calls. On the track the group utilize quiet loud structure with a sombre verse followed by a soaring chorus. Though the recording is a little rough around the edges its still a great track, B-sides of this quality are surely the sign of a good band. Shields:Expanded is out in November on Warp.
Sons of The Morning EP preview
This collaboration between two instrumental hip-hop artists, seasoned producer Prefuse 73 and relative newcomer and Brainfeeder records affiliate Teebs. This ten minute long preview more than wets the appetite, merging ambient soundscapes, acoustic samples and organic beats into a rather lush and beautiful sounding whole. This is the first in a run of twelve EPs which will see Prefuse 73 collaborating with beatmakers including Nosaj Thing and Lapalux. The EP is out next week on Yellow Year Records.
