This week's new music feat. Forest Swords, Volcano Choir and more...

This here is a new segment I thought I'd try out, putting together some of the best music I've run across this past week into one place. I'll try and keep it diverse and interesting, and making sure to put in some release dates as well as any other info I can find. Lets see how it goes.


Forest Swords – Weight of Gold His first proper album Engravings is out next week so here is the first track released from that record. Just as sparse as anything from his earlier EPs and maybe a bit more focused than before. Everything is covered in reverb and featuring cut up vocal samples, which is hardly a novel idea nowadays, but still Forest Sword's filtered and lo-fi music sounds like nobody else. I've got high expectations for this release, out on 26 August on TriAngle.


A Winged Victory for the Sullen - Ti Prego Memory Man A beautiful new track from the ambient classical duo, which features the same string swells and pianos we heard on their debut, but that doesn't stop it from being a totally absorbing listening experience. It'll be released on Ghostly International’s new SSM: Opiate compilation, out October 28.


Volcano Choir - Comrade
Bon Iver's Justin Vernon is joining back up with Collections of Colonies of Bees for their new album Repave. On the single Comrade they take a more straight forward approach than anything heard on 2009's Unmap, but still keep a complexity, with some impressive guitar work on display and Vernon's vocal stand out as well as ever, though I’m still unsure about that autotune. Repave is out on September 2 on Jagjaguwar.


Joanna Gruesome – Sugarcrush This brilliantly named Cardiff four-piece are set to release their debut album Weird Sister next month. The first track from that album Sugarcrush is a great piece of messy noise pop, switching between riot grrl angst to dream pop harmonies over lively distortion. Weird Sister is out September 9 in Europe Fortuna POP!


Factory Floor – Turn It Up Though not completely abandoning their noisier leanings of their first EPs, for the self titled debut album Factory floor seem to have embraced the dance floor with this retro leaning opener Turn It Up. As a roboticised voice repeats the track's title and 808 cowbells form a rhythm, a steady bass drum propels the whole track forward. It'll be interesting to see how this fits in with the record when it drops on September the 9th on the DFA label.


PINS - Lost Lost Lost
Finally we have the second track released from this Manchester-based groups forthcoming debut Girls Like Us. Giving of post punk feel as it rides forward atop primal drum rolls and harsh guitar strums like its ready to erupt into something huge and violent at any moment, this group is one to watch. The album is set to be released on September 30th on Bella Union and you can pick up a free download of this track if you head over to the Bella Union Soundcloud page.

I think that went alright. Maybe I'll give it another go next week.
